What I wish I'd know about celery juice

This week’s Q & A is about celery juice.

Question: How do you prepare this Aisling? Is eating celery sticks raw the same, or do you have to juice it? What is the difference between the juice and the celery by itself as it is?

Answer: Thanks for a great Question! First off I’d like to tell you that I wish I had of known of the life changing health benefits of celery juicing way sooner. I was walking past celery in my supermarket and markets not paying it any attention. Instead I was chasing other health trends, many of which ended up hurting my health and not helping.

There is a big difference between eating the celery sticks raw and juicing them. First off you can’t possibly eat the amount of celery you can juice. It’s recommended to drink 1 whole bunch of celery in the morning on an empty stomach. By juicing the celery your body gets a massive boost of live enzymes, minerals and vitamins.

Don’t get me wrong eating raw celery is still helpful but not nearly as powerful as juicing celery.

I juice a whole bunch of celery and add chopped up sticks one by one into my Green Star Juicer.

I enjoy serving my celery juice in either a martini glass or fine wine glass for a touch of glamour to the occasion.

Celery juice is most powerful when you drink it SOLO. 

How Celery Juice benefits you:

When you drink your celery juice first thing in the morning, it will also strengthen your digestion of foods you eat for the rest of the day.  You receive the concentrated undiscovered cluster salts, that do all of the following :

Quickly rebuilds your hydrochloric acid so that your stomach can break down protein.

If protein isn’t broken down properly it will cause gut rot.

Strong hydrochloric acid is important to kill off pathogens entering your mouth. 

Celery Juice increases and strengthens your bile. 

Strong bile is important for the break down fats, and for the killing off pathogens; that have made their way into your body. 

Eating straight celery wouldn’t allow you to get enough of celery’s cluster salts; that acts as antiseptics for pathogens.

I’ve added celery juice to my routine and I can honestly say my nervous system has never been stronger despite going through one of the toughest years of my life with my Mum passing away in May.

Autumn Equinox. Your Opportunity to Cleanse and Let Go

You may have noticed people complaining of various illnesses this time of year. There are colds, flus, stomach bugs and the general feeling of under the weather. Fear not. These are just signs that your body is undergoing a detox. You are not sick. Your body is simply clearing out any toxins that may have built up during the past season to optimise your energy for autumn.

It’s like house cleaning. You get the urge to clear out cupboards, wardrobes, drawers and under the sink leaving you with piles of things/ rubbish that no longer serve you. You can either take unwanted items to the charity shop and recycle what you no longer need. Your house loves you for its nouveau minimalism and appears airier with less clutter. It makes you feel good because you are getting rid of the old to make way for the new.

But what would happen if you just kept things in the house and never did a clear out? The energy would feel heavy with unused items, worn out clothes hanging limply on hangers and rubbish. After a while the clutter would pile up and it would feel unhealthy and unconducive to wellbeing. If at this stage you refused to house clean the dirt would build up creating a polluted home.

It is the same with the human body. We have two annual equinoxes, one in the autumn and one in spring when the energy naturally rises to detoxify our cells. Both of these times are opportune times for the body to shift what it no longer needs as the seasons change over.  

 I find it interesting that Chinese people go to their Health Care Practitioner twice a year to help make the shift from the expansive energy of summer to the more contracted energy of autumn and winter and likewise from winter into the more expansive energy of spring. Wise people.

To be truly healthy and to embrace the natural energy of the seasons we can go with this cleanse and assist it. We can go vegan for a week or two, for however long it takes to clear the cold/flu symptoms. We can dust off the juicer and have wonderful cleansing juices that clear out our congested lymphatics and cells. We can have cleansing soups and autumn fruits such as apples, pears and berries. We can drink lemon water in the morning to kick start the detox and drink plenty of water to encourage the body to release what it no longer needs.  

This time of the year I see advertisements on chemist’s windows for Calpol and Uniflu- medicines to target cold/flu symptoms. Although used to treat the symptoms of colds and flus they stop house cleaning in its tracks. This is because the body naturally raises its temperature to help burn up what’s not needed in the body. When that process is halted, what was attempting to be eliminated from the body stays.

Our health depends on the efficiency of our cells to take in nourishment and equally to eliminate waste products. The body in its wisdom employs the cold virus to help it clean itself. It is a process that needs to be honoured and facilitated by a cleansing diet and lots of rest with TLC. It is healthy to get one or two colds a year. Unfortunately, the perception around colds and flus is that they are inconvenient, driving people to take medication to lessen the process. Rather than respecting that their body needs to rest, they override the body’s symptoms to stay in work. 

So what happens if we suppress the cold virus? When the acute illness is not allowed to be expressed (sneezing, coughing , sore throat, achy bones ect) what was meant to be gotten rid of goes deeper into the tissues and organs of the body. What we are now seeing is a rise in chronic illnesses such as asthma, kidney disease and mental health conditions as a result of the body not being allowed to cleanse itself. 

There is a saying that if you feed a cold you will have to starve a fever. This is because the body does not need build up foods with acute illnesses such as colds and flus. It needs cleansing foods so that the body can eliminate its toxic load. This comes naturally to me as whenever I got sick as a child I was put on the couch and given soups, juices and fruits until I got better. No matter how much I didn’t like the symptoms I learned that they were there for a reason. Yes I would have been uncomfortable for a few days but it was fine. I knew I would recover as I always did.

I have friends who would have gone to the doctor who would have offered them painkillers (they reduce glutathione stores), antibiotics (they wipe out healthy gut bacteria and lead to cellular damage). In some instances, steroids are now also being subscribed to further reduce inflammation.

Today the sun crossed the Celestial equator (the imaginary line in the sky) that corresponds to our earth equator. From today onwards the nights will draw in with the days becoming shorter. I wish you all a happy healthy Equinox. May whatever needs to be released physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually be fully expressed. It’s okay to sneeze. It’s not okay to take anything that impedes your energy and stops you from having a lovely autumn. 

House cleaning? Yes please. Your house/body will thank you for it.

Q:How can I learn to trust the Universe?

This week's question came from a lady who wanted to know how we can develop a trust in the universe which can be challenging when life isn't going in the way we had planned. Many people are so used to being in the driving seat of their lives that when ill health or a traumatic event happens, it can feel for a time that life is spiralling out of control. When this happens and someone casually says that you need to develop a trust in the universe, this can feel like the wrong response ,when all you want is to get back into your old life that was safe, secure and known. 

I know what this feels like as it happened to me when I had to develop a trust in the universe at a young age. I was on holidays from University and working two Summer jobs, partly to fund my life for the coming term and partly to pay for a holiday with my friends. Due to many reasons, some explained in a previous blog. I became ill and absolutely exhausted. With little lifeforce energy, life began to rapidly unravel and although I tried to patch things up with medication I limped along, knowing that this wasn't a long term solution.  I recall thinking that all I wanted was to have my old life back but the universe had other plans for me.

Once I began my healing journey I had to learn to let go. This wasn’t easy as I was used to setting goals, working towards them and making new ones. I remember even writing down the month I thought I would get better and crossed off each new achievement as I was recovering. I kept a journal of how I felt at each stage, how I wanted to feel and had marked out a date when I would be full of energy and happiness. When it didn’t happen in the time zone I had anticipated I felt that I had let myself down and that the universe sucked big time. I remember crying to my mum and she told me that there are times in life when it is best not to attach too much to outcome. The ego part of me recoiled at such a suggestion as I had put so much time and energy into getting well but I was willing to try. It was my turning point as once I let go and stopped focusing on getting well my energy gradually returned.

My recipe for learning to trust in the universe.

1)    I learned that if we try to control the outcome we are overtly focusing on the problem. There is a universal law that we strengthen that which we oppose. I was opposing myself, sending myself messages that I wasn’t right. I had to learn to love and accept myself where I was at that point in time. Yes I had the intention of getting my energy back but instead of focusing on that intention I let it go. If we attach too much to outcome we tend to block the flow of life. Society tends to judge us on what we do and focuses on our monetary value. I had to learn that I was enough just the way I was. 

2)    I realised that there was little point in waiting to be happy in a future setting so I decided to find happiness on a daily basis. I tapped into my vision daily. I learned to cultivate joy in nature, go for gentle walks, appreciate the beauty of where I lived. I was eating a super healthy diet and made beautiful meals full of energy, colour and taste. I was sending messages of life and love to my body and to my soul.

3)    Being outside in nature helped me to align with the universal energy. Nature is part of who we are and being outside, walking or gardening helped me to tune into the earth upon which we all live. Nature is a powerful ally and being in it reduces inflammation, sends a calming message to the nervous system and feeds the senses. I learned to love the trees in the local forest, appreciate their majesty and sense their life giving force. I enjoyed how I felt being outside walking even in the Irish rain. 

4)    We got rid of our TV as it was sprouting negative news and creating a world vision that wasn't mine. In doing this I spent lots of time in silence and really learned to tune into my own thoughts and feelings. This helped me to develop and refine my own intuition. I became able to discern how I felt in certain situations and how I felt around people. I felt I was really learning to listen to my inner guidance. I know that this concept of trust can be a challenging one for some people, especially when they are reminded on on a continuous news loop that the world isn't  a safe place. I can't stress enough how important it is to extricate oneself from the fear grid and choose what you read and what you watch.

5)    I fed my soul with inspiring books and quotes. I watched comedies and laughed. This helped me to stay upbeat and as my energy and awareness rose I started to attract into my life the people and experiences that would lead me to the next step in my life. We attract where we are at on an energy level so it’s important to work on increasing our energy and vibration.

6)    As my energy increased through food, supplements and daily practices I felt a confidence in my  body that I didn’t have before. I began to trust in my body and in its ability to create energy. From being able to trust myself I began also  to trust in a universe that had provided me with the support structure I needed for my recovery. I became grateful for what the universe had provided and instead of berating myself, I began to acknowledge myself for having undertaken a journey that would eventually bring me into a place of health, happiness and lots of love.

7)    I learned to trust in the unknown elements of life and not to future trip which only triggered fear and anxiety. The unknown becomes the known on a daily basis and all we really have is now. I began to become more present and more at peace in the now.

8)    I cleared any limiting thoughts and beliefs I had about myself and also cleared my ancestral karma, by cellular and emotional clearing. I was simply making room for the new detoxed me. I discovered that we can block what we need when we become enmeshed in our stories. The past is the past and the real power and potential is in the moment. We can work on creating a newer happier story. 

There were times of course when life wasn’t all plain sailing. Anytime I decided to control the outcome my energy would drop and I would have to go back to the drawing board and learn to release again and again. I learned to simply state my intentions and let go. When energy increases, one’s vibration increases and this is what allowed me to be open to the many miracles and surprises that the universe had and still has to offer. Trust in the universe starts with you and the further you are on your healing journey the easier it becomes. One step at a time illuminates the next one, guiding us on our continued evolution.

What to do when you feel stuck?

There are times when it feels that no matter how much you want something to happen, it just doesn’t.  This is despite positive thinking, practicing the law of attraction to a tee and putting oodles of mantras in strategic positions on the bedroom wall. I am attracting my ideal partner. My ideal job is coming right now. The universe supports me. And yet nothing happens and you begin to think maybe all of this is just wishful thinking.

Now while I believe in the power of positive thinking I know that for it to really work there needs to be an energetic transformation at the physical level. This is because energy is held at the physical level and this is where the matrix of our memories are stored. So when we are stuck it is because our cells are not vibrating at a frequency high enough to attract what we really want.

To create lasting transformation there needs to be a corresponding cellular shift. If we try to create our ideal future and attempt to co- create a new reality using the same building blocks that create our current reality, then things don’t happen as quickly as we want to or not at all. Our thoughts, memories and beliefs are held in our cells. So for instance if we think we want a better job but if the thought pattern that we don’t deserve it is locked into the magnetic memory of our cells then it is difficult to manifest the new job.

I know some people whose problems today are the same as they had over a decade ago- the same issues are still running their lives and making them feel powerless. They may have spent a lot of time talking through their issues but years later the same record is playing out from the magnetic memories of their cells. They are stuck. So how do we change the record so that the one we want to have playing is playing loudly and clearly? 

The change has to occur on a cellular level. Each of us is made up of trillions of cells which are the building blocks of our physical selves. If we want to manifest a new reality, one that is free of limiting beliefs, then we must release those beliefs from the cells. We need to work on softening and opening the cells membrane to release what’s inside.

I’ve worked on myself at a cellular level and while initially I was concentrating on increasing my energy and getting myself well from depression other changes began to happen. I began to see a change in the way I was thinking and feeling. I had changed my diet and taken supplements to open the cell membrane. This caused my body to detoxify on the physical level. For instance magnesium is a mineral that promotes expansion and literally is the light that sparks the energy in the cells.  When we expand on the physical this has a knock on effect onto the other energy body’s such as the mind and the emotional. The more I cleared on a cellular level the more my life began to expand outwards in a positive way. It was akin to peeling away the layers of an onion and when yet another layer was peeled away there was a new shift in consciousness and perception.

The physical energy body is the most dense and holds our reality in place. The greater the density on this level the greater the delay between what we want to happen and the time in which it happens. When we work on releasing physical density we really are working on opening ourselves to a new reality. By  increasing the oxidation rate in our cells by taking certain supplements the cells begin to open and shed their density.  Whatever has been stuck in the cells is then eliminated. Along with the physical toxicity are old memories, old beliefs, old ways of reacting to situations and inherited ancestral blueprints.

So when people say they feel stuck, they are stuck at a physical cellular level. To change we need to work on changing the electrical potential of the cell so that the rigid fixed reality becomes more fluidic and open to newer possibilities. Change at a physical level creates a domino effect onto the emotional, mental and spiritual energy bodies. When our cells are detoxed and we are replete with minerals our body is able to hold more energy and light..

Our positive thinking now becomes more than just a mental construct as it becomes grounded in our new physical reality.  We attract who and what we are on an energy level. This really is how the law of attraction works. If we raise our energy levels by working on nutrition and taking supplements that give the correct cellular charge we naturally rise in frequency.  That rise in frequency on the inside attracts its corresponding frequency on the outside.

The currency of the universe is energy. To come unstuck we need to increase our energy levels to create movement. Creating movement in the cells creates a corresponding movement in our lives. It never ceases to amaze me when this happens not just to me but to the clients that I work with. It is the energy shifts that we create inside that make all the difference in the outside world. One of my clients was very much stuck on an emotional level and no matter what she did she was unable to break free of a stifling friendship that was draining her energy. By working on herself at a cellular level, her friendship with this other woman changed because now instead of being taken advantage of, she finally had the energy to protect herself and put in the boundaries she so needed.

Q. Hi Aisling I’ve been reading  about the importance of magnesium in our diet and how many of us are deficient in it today. I would like to know why you would recommend it, what is the best kind of magnesium to take and how much would you recommend?  I sometimes find it difficult to fall asleep, especially if I’ve had a busy day.

A. Hi Laura, thanks for your question this week. Many people are deficient in magnesium due to post -industrial practices that have made the soil deficient. Vegetables that grow on deficient soil are very low in magnesium, a mineral that we need for our vitality and our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Magnesium really is nature’s chill pill. Without this mineral people find it difficult to relax. I always know when I am getting deficient as I become a jitter bug. I tend to worry about everything, from my impending driving test to buying my ideal home. Worry thoughts jostle for pole position in my brain and I feel myself rapidly going into fight and flight while being somewhere innocuous such as sitting on a chair! To counteract this I reach out for my magnesium capsules and begin to replete.

The first difference is my mind seems to slow down, my worry thoughts vanish and I feel calm. Although I don’t take magnesium everyday I take it whenever I need it for a few days. I feel that the body absorbs what it needs from the capsules and I feel happy and contented. The driving test is still looming but hey it’s not the end of the world and next time I’m taking the test in an automatic electric car that drives like a dream. Magnesium is one of the first minerals we lose when we are stressed so this could be why you find it hard to sleep when you’ve had a busy day. What happens is we become too tired and too wired to sleep. I’ve never had a problem sleeping but magnesium deficiency affects people in different ways and some people find it difficult to either fall asleep or they tend to wake up during the night and are unable to fall asleep until it's time to get up. 

The magnesium that I take is magnesium citrate along with B vitamins, zinc, selenium and manganese.  I find this formula is very soothing to my nervous system.I also use magnesium oil as this oil is readily absorbed transdermally. I often use this after a shower as a barometer and find that if my magnesium levels are getting low it tends to slightly sting my skin. I tend to alternate between these two types of magnesium.

From my experience I have found that many of my clients sleep well with magnesium in its citrate form but others swear by magnesium glycinate. They swear it lets them sleep like a baby. 

Without knowing your case history I am unable to prescribe exact dosages as there can be contraindications when taking magnesium such as if you have kidney problems or if you are taking blood pressure medication.  Magnesium naturally lowers blood pressure so medication would need to be adjusted. People respond differently to magnesium. In some cases the oral dosages may need to be increased or decreased according to how the person is responding.  In other instances the person is very sensitive to taking oral supplements and can only tolerate using  magnesium oil on the skin.

Q: Hi Aisling. Do you have a particular linseed tea recipe that you follow? Why is Linseed tea good for me?

A:  I will address the second part of the question first. Linseed tea, as it is gelatinous, is wonderfully hydrating and soothing to the colon. It also helps the colon to hold onto fluid. The seeds are rich in omega 3 oils, antioxidants, magnesium, manganese and B vitamins. Linseed tea helps to stablise blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol.  I drink linseed tea when I feel I need it. I find it is very helpful when I travel as travelling makes me feel dehydrated more than anything, especially air travel.  I find it very soothing at bedtime. You can add in some lemon, ginger and honey if you like to jazz it up.  I actually enjoy the taste of linseed tea on its own. I am a huge fan! 

Recipe for Linseed Tea

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of Flax Seeds

1 litre of filtered water 

Method

Add flax seeds to the water in an adequately sized pan (as it tends to boil over easily). Bring to the boil for a brief moment, turn off the heat and put the lid on the pan. Leave to stand for 12 hours or overnight.

Then bring it back to the boil and very gently simmer for 1 hour stirring occasionally to prevent the seeds from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Keep a close eye on the pan as it can easily boil over and makes a big mess! Strain the seeds off the gloopy liquid and discard the seeds.

Keep the liquid in a bottle in the fridge, it should keep for about 3-4 days and can be thinned to taste with hot or room temperature filtered water. It usually lasts 2 days in my home as we like to drink it fresh.

Caring For Yourself is a Revolutionary Act

Really caring for yourself and honouring your unique energy system is revolutionary as its very action begins to unravel the old matrix of survival consciousness. In survival consciousness, we get stuck in stories that are limiting and fear inducing, that keep us trapped in an endless loop of suffering. While in this state we have little trust that life will yield its treasures when experiences up until this point have dictated otherwise.

In survival consciousness, we remain shut off from our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual body which is one of the reasons we follow the medical system and take drugs to halt the symptoms of illness. Symptoms are messengers and are suppressed when we halt them in their tracks. By thwarting our bodies’ attempts to throw off toxicity we undermine our physical integrity. Not only that but we now have the compounding problem of having to detox the medicine that we took in the first place.

The new health care model focuses on firstly integrating the self and its many aspects. This is very important in healing because neglect of our own inner family leads to disconnection from ourselves. Our consciousness includes the inner babe, the inner child, the inner nurturer, the inner sage and the inner warrior. Neglecting any aspect of ourselves by over emphasising others leads to disharmony and disease.

The new health care model does not work without your conscious engagement and commitment. Healing brings you on your own journey home to your integrated self. It allows the expression of symptoms and the interpretation of their meaning. It sees the symptoms you experience as a catalyst to take you into your new chapter. Transiting into the next chapter requires careful guidance, interpretation and accountability.

We may aspire to changing our lives yet we resist change because our ego wants to stay as we are no matter the cost. The ego wants us to stay in fear, lack and judgement as this is what it is used to. It perceives all change as destabilising, even if that change is for our good and will lead us to a better place.

Excuses the ego comes up to keep you the same:

It’s not the right time

I need to be in a better space

I don’t have the money

My car needs new lights

The dog needs grooming for his birthday

My children need music lessons

Yet we cannot create a new reality for ourselves if we are using the current building blocks of the old template as this is what binds us to the illusion of separation and keeps us trapped. The ego knows this and will do anything to maintain the status quo.

In the old template, we are deeply conditioned into thinking of other people first. Feelings of not being good enough drive our unconscious behaviours. Fear of failure and rejection sets us on a trajectory of addiction and overwork. We are trained to hustle for worthiness and we are exhausted because of it. But our body is the receptacle of our consciousness and it deserves our honour, respect and love. The care and love you give yourself has the power to change you and this transformation sculpts a new outer reality to match your new template. The magic simply shows up.

The Magic of Mentoring

When I first started working as a Nutritional Therapist I’d give clients copious amounts of information about their given condition coupled with advice on the correct foods and supplements to begin their healing journey. I rather naively thought that the information and knowledge would set them free. What I noticed however is that some of them did nothing.

So, what on earth was happening? In hindsight, I realised that the gap between where a client wanted to go and where they were currently at was enormous. Just giving a one -off session, hoping that healthier habits would be adhered to was not taking this into account. This is because making changes without support and accountability can be difficult. Knowledge is one thing but the practical application of this knowledge is another.   

It was time for me to change the way I worked if I wanted to help people regain their health.  Knowledge clearly was not enough. If I was to make real change in my client’s lives I would have to look at ways in which I could work at my full capacity.  Over time I developed my 3-6-month health mentoring programme which has revolutionised my practice and has given my clients the results they need.  

My health mentoring programmes doesn’t just focus on food. I work in developing the correct mind set, I dissolve limiting beliefs, I design strategies that are soul filled, and enable my clients to adopt healthier habits that fit into their lives.

Guiding clients very often to their own conclusions in a session is what gets them to shift their own belief patterns that may be blocking their progress. It is amazing what happens when subtle shifts are made that lead to positive actions.

During my mentoring programme dietary changes are introduced and monitored on a weekly basis. Sessions are one to one and take place at the same time every week. Clients are given a clear understanding of what happens to their body when biochemical changes take place. This is important as the healing journey is not linear. There are periods of expansion and contraction occurring as the body releases its toxicity and gains greater integrity.

The weekly sessions build on the previous session so that knowledge and understanding is consolidated. Scaffolded changes help to avoid the sense of overwhelm people feel when confronted with having too many things to do. It’s not possible to provide the necessary education in a few session as the diet, the supplements and techniques are adjusted weekly and when needed.

Weekly mentoring empowers my clients as they learn to understand how their body reacts to changes in diet and what techniques to implement to ensure the safe removal of toxicity from their cells. Emotional support is crucial as when we detox on a physical level we also begin to clear old stuck feelings that were lodged in our tissues.

My mentoring programme has been a massive learning curve for me as I could not have achieved what I wanted to achieve with clients without creating it.

With each person I work with, we go on a journey together to get to where they want to go to. I love mentoring as it provides a structure to my healing programme. It gives me the opportunity to combine my occupational therapy skills with my nutritional work as I tailor my programme to suit each person’s needs. I find that mentoring gives me the space to work with clients on all levels of healing which is so important as our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies are deeply interconnected. I have witnessed so many times that when people begin to make changes in one area of their lives and it unravels the blocks they are having in another.

Mentoring is magical and the investment pays dividends for your current and future health. Yes, you can get a plan from a nutritionist but if your old patterns and behaviours aren’t transformed then you won’t get the results.

Appetite control is possible

How many of you have sat down at night, tired after a working day, a cup of tea in one hand and a packet of biscuits in the other. You know how it goes as you promise yourself one or two delicious organic real butter biscuits. One biscuit is dunked into the tea and seeing as it’s half melted it doesn’t count. The second one is eaten straight away to follow in the wake of its half drowned brother. The crunch triggers the brain to recall the pleasure, the joy of other past crunchy chews and the hand guided by the brain reaches out for the third and maybe the fourth biscuit. Before you know it the packet is almost eaten and you are left feeling bereft, not because there are only a few left but because you felt so out of control in biscuit presence.

In swoops guilt and triggers stress hormones (cortisol) that steer energy away from digestion and lay down fat in the abdominal area. Feeling stressed with the release of cortisol you reach out for the remaining biscuits and devour them. The thought of biscuits in the house for a minute more is enough to give you heart palpitations and sure once they’re gone so is the temptation. Or so you reason. You promise yourself you will never again look at, let alone buy those organic utterly butterly addictive cookies. Never ever…

Dopamine and appetite

Every love story in history begins with dopamine. Dopamine, one of our neurotransmitters, prompts us to love our food thereby ensuring our survival. Nature has designed an inbuilt reward system so when we eat our brain recognises we’re doing something right and releases dopamine in response. We interpret this response as pleasure which prompts us to eat again and again.

The amount of dopamine produced in response to food all depends on what we eat. If we eat a meal with steak and broccoli for instance we produce moderate amounts of this chemical but if we eat a bowl of ice cream with high levels of fat and sugar we produce high levels of dopamine- hence the wonderful feel good feeling we get with ice cream and the temptation to eat more. Insulin regulates the release of dopamine so if we eat a diet that is high in carbohydrates and sugar we experience peak dopamine levels.

The problem with this is once we experience rapid dopamine release our brain is flooded with it. When this happens, the brain tries to balance itself by reducing dopamine receptor cells. This means that with less receptor cells we become less sensitive to the neurotransmitter and dopamine levels drop. So in order to regain the high we get from food there is a tendency to eat more which then becomes a vicious cycle. This is why one biscuit becomes two and three and four as the brain tries to increase its happy chemicals.

What can I do to boost dopamine levels and reduce cravings?

  • Eat foods that are naturally high in the amino acid L- Tyrosine such as eggs, fish, chicken, red meat, dairy products, nuts and seeds, green vegetables, avocados, apples, oatmeal, turmeric, green tea and bananas.  L-Tyrosine is a major building block of dopamine.
  • Reduce your intake of caffeine, alcohol and sugar as these trigger rapid dopamine release and reduce dopamine receptors.
  • Include foods high in natural probiotics such as kefir, Sauerkraut, and natural yoghurts that favour dopamine production. Unhealthy gut bacteria lower dopamine.
  • Correct a magnesium deficiency as magnesium is a co factor for the biosynthesis of dopamine. Common symptoms of a magnesium deficiency are craving for carbohydrates and salt and conditions such as constipation, high blood pressure, fatigue, irritability and mood swings
  • Ensure you have adequate omega 3 oils, zinc, iron, vitamin B6 and vitamin D to raise dopamine levels
  • Exercise raises the baseline levels of dopamine by promoting the growth of new brain cell receptors so go walking, jogging, or swimming to boost this motivational chemical.
  • Take action to reduce stress levels as stress interferes with the production of dopamine. Meditate, take a walk, practice reframing negative situations. Boost dopamine by engaging in hobbies that give you pleasure.
  • When we accomplish anything in our life we get a dopamine hit as a reward so take steps towards reaching your goals. Begin with short term goals and when each one is ticked off you feel so much better. Some people enjoy making lists and ticking off their tasks as they are completed.
  • Dopamine helps us to get into the flow so lose yourself in a creative endeavour of your choice. It could be writing, composing, painting your home. Or it could be sorting out that cupboard under the stairs and upcycling its contents. I enjoy writing and researching and hours have flown by while I work.
  • Listening to your favourite music rises dopamine. I like to listen to Richie Ros's music to relax.  
  • Keeping a healthy weight is important for normal dopamine receptor sites. Obesity leads to blunted dopamine pathways due to exposure to highly palatable foods. This leads to overeating to stimulate the pleasure circuits in the brain.
  • Sleep is vital to keeping dopamine receptors high. Dopamine is crucial for our REM sleep cycle and is also linked to melatonin production which helps us switch off and go to sleep. So try to establish a regular bedtime ritual making sure you get between 7-9 hours sleep. Any more or less than that can interfere with dopamine production.

Cows are back in town

Despite being vilified and blacklisted since the 60’s as being implicated in heart disease, butter is finally making a comeback. The low fat propaganda, promoted by the fake food industry, is melting now that market demand for butter is increasing. Clever marketing campaigns in the past had hoodwinked nations into believing margarine was good for their health.  

Cows however are back in town and whatever guilt and shame they’ve been made to feel has been absolved. Cows have been forgiven. The public response has been phenomenal with butter sales taking over the margarine market. Nothing tastes as good as real butter tastes and cows know this.

In the previous reign of terror, fear froze taste buds into believing margarine tasted as good as butter and unlike butter was good for their hearts. The margarine cult was born. The only bovine crime cows were guilty of, was of not speaking out and standing up for their produce, but this was a time when google translate had yet to be invented. Far from turning the udder cheek cows have recently made the following statement to journalists from The Irish Farmer’s Journal; "MOOOOOOOOOOOOO"  (Google Translate:The truth will set us free).

And so it has. Margarine spreads are accused of being the imposters that stole butter’s colour as they made an attempt to emulate its spread. They couldn’t steal the taste of real butter that melts in your mouth and sends all sorts of happy messages to your hormones. They also couldn't steal the benefits of real butter as it is a natural source of vitamin A, D, E and K2, so essential to adrenal and thyroid health. Butter is also a source of arachidonic acid, vital for brain function and development. It helps the immune system by building healthy cell membranes.

If a container states you can’t believe it’s not butter then it’s not butter. Despite claims that low fats spreads prevent heart disease, the reality is that once people switched from eating butter to eating man made hydrogenated spreads, heart disease levels went up and obesity increased. We need saturated fats in moderation for healthy cell walls that compose our organs. What we don’t need are hydrogenated fats that clog up cell membranes, and cause inflammation. Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils found in spreads have been linked to damaged arteries, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

When scientists discovered that the trans-fats in spreadable hydrogenated oils were damaging for health, they retreated to their labs to find a way of reformatting their hydrogenated goo as opposed to the goodness of the moo brand they were now up against. The latest claim is that spreads are being made of 'interesterified' vegetable oils (a treatment that re­arranges the fat molecules under high temperature and pressure, using enzymes or acids as catalysts). I’ll stick with the butter thanks.   

Love has lifted butter up where it belongs- on shelves in fridges across the nation, spread seductively on bread, dripping on runny eggs, swimming on vegetables and on our national staple- the potato. Marg on a spud? I don’t think so. We were given taste buds for a reason. Let that reason be love.

The Dark Ages

During the dark ages of illusion and separation women were persecuted, vilified and destroyed. In a patriarchal culture a woman’s power was regarded as suspect, a threat to the established order. Women possessed gifts and an energy that was beyond a man’s understanding and for that she was condemned. She was not officially allowed to study medicine and the position of the church at that time was that if she dared to cure without having studied, then she was a witch and would have to die. Women were faced with an evil that surpassed any rational understanding.

But the Burning Times did not put an end to our powers. Women, as keepers of the mysteries went underground and their DNA passed through each generation until it was time to re-emerge. 

The Age of Aquarius

The time is now as we fully enter into the Age of Aquarius and the rise of the goddess has begun. Everywhere women are casting off the wounds of suppression and are beginning to heed their own unique call to action. The collective unease of having to live within a linear patriarchal society is being felt. We are not able to maintain our energy and vitality in this ego separation and competition when as women, we know on a deeper level that for us to thrive we need an interconnected community of support and inspiration that will eventually create a more equable and just world for our children’s future.

Together We Ascend

Now it will be different because it is not just about the female power rising and taking over from the male. Rather it is a time where we will balance the feminine and masculine qualities within all of us. The feminine energy will help counteract the male driven doingness that has been the hallmark of our survival in the outer world. By teaching us how to be, we begin to develop our intuition and creativity and we begin to explore the importance of our emotional and soul body. The feminine energy leads to the development of a strong inner world that gets us in touch with the Aquarian values of compassion, love, peace, harmony, integration and nurturing. As sisters we rise, while embracing our brothers as we acknowledge that the individual becomes the universal while still maintaining individuality which paves the way for unity in diversity. Together we ascend.

The Healing Arts

For thousands of years mystery schools helped to initiate both men and women into embodied female wisdom. People were trained in the healing arts and in developing their own connection to their intuitive faculties and to their own divinity. Queen Scotia, daughter of the pharaoh Akhenaton, brought her mystery teachings to Ireland. Her divine feminine thread links her to us as we reawaken in lives that include family responsibilities, work and relationships.

Our challenge is to develop our emerging gifts and maintain our energy at this time of incredible earth shifts and transformations. Discovering the Root of Depression

It is difficult to heal from depression naturally without the correct guidance and support. As a result of my own experience and training I have a profound understanding of how the body heals and the process involved in each stage of healing. It’s not a linear path of course as there are ups and downs that need careful monitoring. Prioritising your own health above all else is also necessary and it takes mentoring to embody this new way of thinking and being.

I would like to share with you my own story of how I ended up with depression and my healing journey. It is a story of a time when I should have been happy and carefree. What had seemed like a reasonable solution to a health condition resulted in a cascade of symptoms that caused me to lose my health and become severely depressed.

When I was a teenager I had spots and like any teenager this spelled disaster. At a time when I had discovered boys, my skin flared up, leaving me with spots on my chin, neck and back. I tried every potion and lotion on the market that promised clear skin but nothing worked. I tried to camouflage any flare-ups with heavy makeup and concealer but at night when I cleansed my face, the reality would hit me. I felt doomed.

An aunt of mine who had suffered a similar fate in her teenage years told me to go to the doctor for a prescription of antibiotics for acne to clear up my skin.  My mum who is a strong advocate for looking at what causes symptoms and followed natural healing was against my decision.  However at the age of 16 I felt invincible and I reasoned that a course of Tetracycline would do me no harm. After all it is a regularly prescribed medication for cases of acne and spots.

I took the medication and my skin cleared up. However once my 3 month prescription was up and I stopped taking the antibiotics the spots returned with a vengeance. Without thinking I took a prescription for another 3 months. My skin cleared yet again and all was well in my world. Or so I believed.

For my summer holiday that year we went to Lake Garda in Italy. While I was there I ate pasta and although in the past I never had problems with it, this time I felt different. I became bloated after every meal and had a lot of abdominal pain. When I returned from holiday the pain was so severe that I ended up in casualty and was told by the doctor that I had irritable bowel syndrome. I was advised to take peppermint capsules after each meal but this afforded little relief.

I also noticed that my energy levels were considerably lowered. I tried to counteract this by going to the gym and spending time pounding on the treadmill and doing weights. I was doing a split shift waitressing job that summer and no matter what I did I could feel my life force diminishing and with it my mood.

There was no talking to me at that stage about diet and supplements. I felt profoundly unwell and wanted a quick solution.  I went to my GP who, after listening to my symptoms, prescribed a drug for epilepsy. Seemingly this is prescribed for people with bipolar disease. I was not then and am not bipolar so I threw away the prescription. 

I went on a holiday with some friends in the autumn but despite spending time in the sun and relaxing by the pool I felt on edge and anxious. When I returned home I felt exhausted and unable to get on with my life. I felt horribly depressed and wanted an answer. I went to a psychiatrist at this point who agreed I had depression and was prescribed an antidepressant. Although I took this for four years I still remained low in energy. I was coping but not really living at a time in my life when I should have been having a carefree existence.   

When the student is ready the teacher really does appear. In the summer of 2010, once I had finished my degree in Occupational Therapy I went to see Nutritionist and author Barbara Wren who encouraged me to see the connections between the medication I had taken prior to getting ill and how they had caused me to become depressed.   

I had used antibiotics for my skin which in turn had affected my gut flora to such an extent that I developed IBS. I experienced a gradual lowering of my energy as antibiotics like tetracycline cause mitochondrial dysfunction. They can damage the way the cells produce energy. The end result was that my energy plummeted and I became depressed.

“Tetracyclines have a particular toxic effect on the gut wall by altering protein structures in the mucus membranes. This in turn does two things. First it makes the gut wall anatomically vulnerable to invasion by pathogenic microbes; second, it alerts the immune system to attack these changed proteins, starting an auto- immune reaction in the body against its own gut. In parallel, tetracyclines stimulate grown of disease- causing Candida fungus, Staphylococci and Clostridia in the digestive tract.”

The good news was that I recovered from changing my diet, drinking non-fluoridated water and from taking supplements that restored my biochemistry. I also made lifestyle changes and fully engaged in my journey back to full health. Healing was like peeling layers from an onion. When my energy came up and my mood improved I knew I was on the right track. As my body began to throw off toxicity at one point my skin erupted and then it healed. It followed Hering's Law of Cure which states that all cure starts from within out, from the head down and in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed.

No doctor had ever mentioned that the antibiotics I had taken for my skin could damage my gut flora or that they could reduce my energy. Suppression in my case had led to depression. When I recovered I knew that I wanted to train in a profession that looked at what caused illness and supported the body to heal naturally. I know now and knew even back then that this had happened to me for a reason. The reason was that once I recovered that I was to help others to regain their health.

Many of my clients who suffer from low energy and mood disorders have a history of suppression. They have used medications such as antibiotics for what were minor illnesses, not realising what the antibiotics were doing. The antibiotics arrested their bodies’ attempts to cleanse and in doing so pushed the toxicity deeper. Toxins in the cells impede the body’s ability to cleanse and to absorb nutrients. Instead of having a spring clean, the rubbish is pushed under the carpet, giving the appearance that the person has recovered from symptoms and is so- called well.

A particular client of mine had been given antibiotics for a yearly chest infection for over 25 years. After so much suppression the toxicity had gone to the deepest level of the mind and he ended up taking drugs for depression and chronic social anxiety. When the presenting illness is at the mind level, it is at the deepest level of all, blocking the cell from the light which arrests further growth and development.  

Peeling away the layers of suppression is an art form and needs a lot of guidance and support. The process of healing does not just consist of diet, supplements and techniques, it also involves cultivating the right mind-set for healing on this journey of trust. It also involves learning to interpret symptoms and respond in the right way.

During the process of healing, the body will begin to eliminate stored toxins and residues of medications. This can feel uncomfortable at times as the organs of elimination are now being forced to work overtime. Huge emotional support is needed at this point to provide an understanding as to what is happening and how best to deal with it. I provide the education and the rationale behind each stage to ensure my clients feel safe and secure undergoing their healing journey. By scaffolding the healing experience I help reduce the stress response so that the healing can go into the body where it is needed rather than into the mind that is stuck in a loop of trying to figure things out with constant googling. A vital part of my treatment is to get people to identify with the well part of themselves that may not be initially apparent when the energy is too low.  

The gems for me are found in each client’s journey of discovery when they begin to join their own dots as their awareness and perception reach new heights. Physical healing goes hand in hand with raised perception. I feel honoured to be part of people’s own reconnection to themselves and to their personal transformation.

My experience taught me that for every action we take in life there is an equal reaction and that we cannot tamper with our health without consequences. I could have stayed stuck at that juncture in my life being labelled as someone with depression who was dependent on medication. But I knew that in the future I wanted to be a mother and for that I needed to be able to regain my health. I knew that I didn’t want to pass my deficiencies onto the next generation.

Looking back I believe that it was my inner knowing and my overriding desire to get better that prompted me to take the leap into the unknown. I landed quite comfortably on the other side. I, who had known nothing about coming off medication was willing to learn how to do it and I did, one careful step at a time. I may have lost some of my younger years to depression but my experience led me to understand how the body and mind works and how it heals. It led me onto my life’s path as a Nutritional Therapist and an Energy Transformation Coach.

Survival kit of Skellig Michael Monks

Seaweeds link me to my ancestry for I am a descendant of people who have either eaten seaweed and/or used it to fertilise their land.  Its minerals live in my blood that someday will be passed on through my DNA onto the next generation. Living on the west coast of Ireland, seaweeds are an integral part of our coastline that are ignored for the most part by people as they tumble onto the shore, darkening the sea with their pigmented hues of brown, green and red. Yet they are a treasure trove of protein, minerals and vitamins that are superior in their nutrients to land vegetables.  

The summers of my childhood were spent on the west coast of Ireland where I foraged for Dillisk with my grandfather Denis. Dillisk or dulse,a red algae is normally found on rocks near deeper water which meant we had to drive out Kerry Head to collect it. Afterwards it would be dried in the sun and later put into bags. My grandfather liked to eat his seagrass raw but I always preferred it in soups and stews where I could benefit from its vitamin and mineral content. I have stories about my great, great grandfather who dragged copious amounts of seaweed from the shore with the help of his donkey and cart. He spread on his farm outside Waterville as a fertiliser for his crops as he knew as did the people before him, that seaweed is a super rich in nutrients.  

I have to admit that I used to be afraid of seaweed whenever I went sea swimming, imagining camouflaged creatures like crabs and eels crawling out to take a bite or two out of me. This of course has never happened so now I swim regardless of the fronds of seaweeds that sometimes wrap around me. During the autumn seaweed releases its iodine content and is absorbed through our skin when we swim or bathe in it.

There are over 500 species of seaweed off the Irish coast line and while I don’t know each of them I know the names of the ones I eat (Dillisk), sea lettuce, carrageen moss and  the ones that I use for a seaweed bath (Fucus Serratus) that I later use as a fertiliser for my composter. Seaweeds are so rich in nutrients, containing twice as much vitamin C as an orange and 50 times as much iron as spinach. Popeye should have gone to the beach! Seaweeds are anti- inflammatory, anti -viral and anti –bacterial. They are great for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and eczema.

Seaweeds are heart friendly as they contain magnesium, a mineral we need for normal heart rhythm. Dillisk helps to combat high blood pressure. Kelp, a brown seaweed is one of the richest sources of iodine that helps with a healthy metabolism and brain function. Carrageen moss is used for bronchial problems and I can attest to its efficacy. I use it when I get a sore throat and chest infection and it does the trick.

There is written evidence that the monks on Skellig Michael harvested Dillisk to use in their cooking. Was this what kept them from feeling cold during the harsh winters in their beehive huts as seaweeds help to boost circulation?

I am lucky to live by the coast where I have easy access to seaweeds. However if you don’t fancy bringing seaweed home or if you’re not a coastal dweller you can buy dried seaweed kelp powder in a tub. It can be used as a face mask, for a seaweed bath or added to your hair conditioner to make your hair super soft. You can also buy variety of seaweeds in health stores such as Nori or Dillisk to put into soups and stews.

Poo Glorious Poo. My personal experience of Coffee Enemas.

I had always been partial to a nice latte but when it was suggested that I take coffee rectally I had instant visions of guts and smelly poo. However having undergone a healing detox programme and in the throes of a healing crisis, I overcame any misgivings and got on with the process. The coffee enema gave me such instant relief from symptoms like nausea, headaches and extreme fatigue that I knew I had discovered the Holy Grail of detox techniques.

I undertook the coffee enemas as part of a supervised healing programme where I learned when to use them, what to expect, what was the best organic coffee to use and how to avoid electrolyte imbalance. If someone with a low mineral and antioxidant status suddenly starts doing coffee enemas they can end up feeling more depleted and even lower in energy. This is why it is so important to begin with a nourishing diet and establish a baseline of minerals and antioxidants.

The coffee enema is for the benefit of our liver- that powerful organ that sits behind our lower right ribcage, that detoxes everything that comes into our body.  One of the primary functions of the liver is to filter blood. Two quarts of blood pass through the liver every minute to be cleared of toxicity. As the liver performs a two- step process to eliminate toxicity there are certain nutrients and enzymes required for each stage. Stage one requires several cofactors such as adequate levels of magnesium, B3, B6 and B12. People who experience an underactive phase 1 of liver detoxification will experience an intolerance to perfumes and other environmental chemicals. It is beneficial for a person with an underactive phase 1 detoxification system to start the morning is to have a glass of warm water with fresh pressed lemon juice.

Phase one of liver detox uses up oxygen and enzymes to burn off toxins. The end products that are released need to be neutralised by phase two of liver detox. For every molecule that is detoxified during phase 1, one free radical is produced. The second phase of liver detoxification relies on phase 2 enzymes to complete the detoxification process.

During phase two of liver detox toxins are neutralised and rendered water soluble which enables them to be eliminated through the kidneys and through sweating in the skin. The pathways here involve Glutathione, sulfation, methylation and sulfoxidation and glucuronidation. The most important antioxidant for neutralizing the free radicals produced in Phase I is glutathione. When high levels of toxin exposure produce so many free radicals from Phase I detoxification glutathione is depleted and the Phase II processes that depend upon glutathione, stop working.

Glutathione is inhibited by excessive alcohol, paracetamol, antibiotics, pesticides, selenium deficiency, B 2 (niacin) deficiency, zinc deficiency and a low protein diet. Glutathione production is magnesium dependent. The Sulfation pathway is inhibited by non- steroidal, anti- inflammatory drugs. The methylation pathway is inhibited by folic acid or B 12 deficiency. The  glucuronidation pathway that metabolises drugs, pollutants and estrogens is inhibited by drugs such as oral contraceptives, aspirin, diazepam, some pesticides and phenolic compounds in air pollution and overuse of paracetamol. About 33% of all drugs are detoxified by this pathway. The proper functioning of the liver's detox systems is important in the prevention of cancer.

The nutrient requirements of phase two are glutathione, B6, vitamin C, cysteine, glutamic acid, choline, betaine, folate through green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and sulphur rich vegetables such as onions, leeks and garlic.

When glutathione levels are low there can be a tendency to arthritis, ADHD, hepatitis and autism. Systemic inflammation is also linked to poor glutathione status. Glutathione is the primary defence responsible for clearing the body of toxins, inflammation from stress and heavy metals. Nutrient poor diets, mental and emotional stress all deplete glutathione reserves.

It is very important that phase one activity does not exceed the ability of the liver’s phase two enzymes to finish the job as otherwise a person who is undergoing a detox regime feels dreadful and experiences what is known as a healing crisis. During the healing crisis antioxidants are used up at an enormous rate, leaving a person feeling toxic, nauseous and in a low mood. Instead of the toxins exiting the body as they should, they are unable to get out and so can shift to a different part of the body. Toxins that come out of the deeper tissues can redeposit in joints causing arthritic pains.

This is where the coffee enema comes in. Coffee, when taken rectally passes through the portal vein directly to the liver where the liver uses the chemicals in the coffee to upregulate the production of glutathione S transferase. This process increases glutathione production by 600-700%.During the process of the coffee enema the liver is stimulated to release toxic bile. This is so important during a healing regime. It is an essential part of my practice as a Nutritionist and Energy Transformation Coach. 

The coffee enema is used in natural clinics all over the world and is strongly advocated by the Gerson Institute where enemas are given a few times a day. However I have found that this amount of enemas is too excessive as there could be electrolyte depletion and a lowering of adrenal energy.

So if coffee enemas are so good why don’t doctors advocate their use? Coffee enemas were included in the Merck Manual, the bible for physicians, from 1899- 1977. The reference to coffee enemas was then removed to make space for other information. (This is what Dr Gonzalez was told when he asked why information about coffee enemas were no longer being included). However current doctors such as holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan writes about the therapeutic use of coffee enemas in her book A Mind of Your Own. In it she describes a paper from the 1932 New England Journal of Medicine that describes resolution of symptoms from depression to psychosis and discharge from inpatient units by simply employing coffee enemas.

Once I experienced the benefits of the coffee enema there was no doubt in my mind that this detox technique was nothing short of a miracle. Any misgivings I had of poo flying in all directions were soon forgotten once I learned how to do them. I used the time to relax and read. Of course I stayed close to the toilet and used Poo PourriAny unsavoury aromas that result can be dealt with by using Poo Pourri, a natural deodoriser for the toilet. This proved to be a lifesaver as when my boyfriend came to stay I wanted to extend the fantasy that I was his sweet smelling pea!

My magnesium miracle- the calm after the storm

My personal experience of magnesium depletion was in hindsight a golden nugget as it showed me just how powerful this one mineral is to balancing our biochemistry. Nobody really thinks about energy until it’s gone and then life becomes a scramble for it. A lack of energy makes you want to take anything to get that feeling of energy back, but no matter how many stimulants you take that underlying depletion is there. Everything becomes such an effort. I took to the bed hoping that rest would restore me and when it didn’t I began to feel helpless, anxious and depressed. I knew there was something seriously wrong. I was only 18 and my 66-year-old grandmother had more energy than me!

The medical approach was drugs for epilepsy which I declined (I did not have epilepsy) and antidepressants which I took because I felt desperate. I wanted to get back to my own life, to feel like me again and to be able to return to college. The years I took anti-depressant medication were difficult as although I was coping with the way I was feeling I did not feel well. Any form of stress would make me panic and anxious and I had no real energy.  

Once my studies in university were complete I was in the zone for seeking solutions to my predicament. I was led to Nutritional Therapist Barbara Wren, author of Cellular Awakening.  Under her care and guidance, I was given a specific diet and one of the minerals I took was magnesium. My body responded positively and over three months my energy started to come back. The brain fog that had plagued me for years lifted and in 6 months I was back to a better version of the old me. Move over Granny.

I immersed myself in studying everything I could about magnesium and the first thing I wondered was how I had become so deficient? Magnesium deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in modern times and is caused by two main reasons. Soil depletion and stress. Soils have become depleted because of industrial agricultural practices that use chemical fertilisers. These chemicals prevent crops from taking up minerals such as magnesium from the soil. Widespread usage of pesticides and herbicides further reduce the uptake of magnesium. Is it little wonder that 80% of people are experiencing health problems due to a lack of magnesium in our diet?  

Stress can cause a magnesium deficiency or a magnesium deficiency can trigger the stress reaction. Stress causes urinary losses of magnesium. You know how it is when the ringtone of the person next to you in a supermarket queue acts like a frenzied grater on your nerves. Then your boyfriend forgets to clean the apartment prior to your arrival and you have a total melt- down. Cortisol and adrenaline, the fight/ flight chemicals either unleash your inner psycho or make you want to run away in a grand dramatic gesture. Take your pick.

The good news is we can replete our magnesium stores. Lately I have been using a magnesium oil. Magnesium oil is recommended by Dr. Caroline Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle. I tend to use it in the morning after a shower when I spray 3-4 sprays of oil onto my skin. What is so great about the oil is that it bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and is absorbed transdermally by the skin where it goes directly to the tissues that need it most. How cool is that? I literally feel my skin drinking it in. The magnesium chloride in the oil stimulates DHEA (a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland) production on the skin. This makes you feel happy and balanced in your body.
